Timid Thistle, a.k.a. T, is a powerful gnoll with tawny fur, brown spots, and long white hair atop her head. She is an Associate of the Round Table. At a mere 6 feet and 6 inches, she stands shorter than most other women in her clan. Growing up, T was often overshadowed by her older sister Serpent, who would later lead a hunting party due to her knack for dirty and effective tactics. With limited leadership opportunity and no skill for witchery, Timid Thistle pursued a new niche - becoming literate and absorbing knowledge of the men and beasts that would pose a threat to the clan.

Timid Thistle found an inner strength through study of her world, and soon after reaching maturity, she told her family and clan council that she was no man. Reactions to this were mixed - while her sister and mother embraced this change, some leaders feared her nature would severely limit her abilities as a hunter and believed she would better fit at home. Determined to prove herself, T joined her sister's party and tried to put forth a veneer of overconfidence. This had a degree of success, and despite her name she became a galvanizing force in her party.

Years later, T's clan would be torn apart by undead and plague while she was away on a hunt. Her father heroically took up arms against the scourge before falling, and her mother soon after fell ill and passed away. Hidden Thistle posthumously earned the name "Dauntless" for his deeds, though few remained to celebrate his naming. In the grief of being unable to eat of her progenitors' flesh in reverence, Timid Thistle carved a small ivory snake woven among a flowering bud from one of few bones that had not been rotted or burnt in a pyre. She carries this with her as a symbol of her clan's power and culture, now reduced to a fractured handful of kholo, roaming across Kelek with no homeland.

As time marched on and the rest of her clan settled within high walls, or sought solitude, or met a bitter end, Timid Thistle faced the need for shelter. She would never again have her clan, but after wandering into Onadbyr bleeding and limping, there was no safety to be found outside the city again.

Description: After the final battle in the rat mines, the cursed banjo was successfully destroyed leaving only a few million rat corpses and several strange wooden dolls. Thanks to the research of Hiromi, these dolls appear to have once been Kami. Nature-based spirit creatures that typically ward forests. With no forest in sight, the source of these creatures comes into question. With the rats now gone, Council member Gregorios wishes to have proper rites conducted and therefore someone has to delve into the deepest parts of the mine and find the source of these Kami.

Log
We enter Gregorios' office, noses assaulted by an excess of incense of varying odor and form. There is religious worship taking place in the mines according to Hiromi's report. A kodama was recovered, and no other spirits of the woods or trees were located (no trees in the mines, meaning they're hiding). We are tasked with finding the trees, or the nature, and ensuring that we please the nature spirits found in the mine. The associates will carry a heavy box down to the mines containing various possible offerings that the spirits may accept or appreciate. Gregorios insists the box should remain dry.

We're given a piece of rope, perhaps from the recovered Kodama in hopes this will aid with our search. This is a rope typically tied around a Kodama's body and buried with them as rites.

We travel the center path of the cave, keeping our eyes out for rats. All we see and smell is rot - the rot of millions of rats. The cave is empty, and silent.

As we continue, we come across an open area with poorly-constructed bridges across treacherous caverns. Dead lanterns lie along the walls. Satori throws a copper coin to the bottom, with an 11 second wait to hear it hit the bottom. We walk down the nearby stairs to get as low as we can from here. As the path runs ragged, we carefully navigate down the cliffs and stairs for an hour or so.

At some point we run out of steps that run straight down - we've only descended about 400-500 feet, and there's no more obvious ledges. We cast Light on Oranges and send him flying down. The sides of the chasm clear way as he continues down - the rocks have been smoothed, and appear wet. The chasm is wider, and there are fewer and fewer ledges to grab. Oranges' lands back on a rock after several minutes, and his feathers appear to be wet.

We can jump to the bottom of the chasm via Feather Fall, likely to fall in a river at the bottom though. Instead we consider navigating the nearby tunnels and caverns to find a safer way down and to have a path up. We consult the Kodama's rope using Consult the Spirits to guide us down.

Associates camp out and sleep after hours of travel. Satori meets the Devil, taken form of an undead rat. The two discuss terms of the contract Satori was offered. Satori argues against the "free pick" of his weapons that are blessed. Satori and the Devil reach an agreement - Satori will give the devil a weapon that he has killed a creature with at the end of each month.

Other night watches are normal. We continue heading down for an extra day. It's a boring trek, and we are thousands of feet down. There's more water in the air, it's very humid. The rope guides us confidently down. Finally, we reach the bottom.

We enter a large cave... but it has no ceiling. We can see all the way to the top of the chasm. There's a large pool of stagnant water, but it seems to have little plant life. The water itself is pitch black, and it's unclear what might be inside.

Large humanoid statues flank the circumference of the cave, but we can't make out any specific details of any given statue as they have worn down. A grave marker sports hundreds of charms and tags, the number may mark how many people it cost to get down here.

The water is slimy. Seems to be vegetation... _lots_ of vegetation. Every bit of water here is just full of black plant life. None of the associates can identify this vegetation without extracting or cutting a piece. We don't particularly want to risk cutting the plants or climbing over the statues, since it may offend the spirits.

Sade finds the pool is only a foot deep - Grist finds the pool is significantly deeper than 1 foot. He is restrained by the vines and plant life in the pool, and he was carrying the box... so it's definitely wet now. Hiromi detects a spirit at the bottom of the pool. Sade jumps back in the water attempting to save Grist while Timid Thistle and Satori jump across. The plants seem to part for Hiromi, forming an easy to walk on platform. She hands a rope to Timid and Satori in hopes to swim down and save Grist.

Hiromi floats down angelically as Grist escapes the grasp of the vines. The rope from the Kendama causes a wooden floor to open like the jaws of the beast, and a bright blue light appears far below the bottom of the pool that can be seen from the surface. Hiromi is sucked into the pool deeper, thrown upwards, and tumbles out. We all end up falling through the pool - and it seems we've gone so far that we are in reversed gravity.

We find ourselves standing in an enormous valley, filled with woods and nature.

We march through the water, and it seems stepping on the grass turns black, and causes plants to wilt. The party removes all metal armor... much to the chagrin of our AC scores. Hiromi consults with spirits, and finds that this place is dying. We all feel a rumble and a crack from the glowing tree along the ground. The tree falls towards us, and on us. Our party is split in half on either side of the tree as sharp vines sprout from the area.

We are attacked by the vines, which lash out with bleeding cuts. A dryad appears and negotiations immediately break down as Timid attempts to assure our lack of harmful intent and Sade punches a shrub to death. We attack the vines as combat continues.

Eventually we convince the Dryad of our peace, showing the Kodama's rope. We express our regret in tarnishing the area with metal. A kodama, referred to as the wise one, speaks: "*marimba noises*". The Dryad seems to understand but none of us do. She offers a piece of black kelp, inserted into our ears, which should allow us to understand the Kodama's form of speech.

"We once kept the gates open, but closed it when attacks came from all sides. You've reached our hidden grove, I'm sorry it's not in a state we could be more proud of." Hiromi asks how we can help. "Many years ago we were a beautiful forest. Our guardian watched over us, but during a time of rest he went into our spring to grow himself. While in hibernation, creatures bearing metal weapons and armor came and cut through our woods, sealing our guardian within the spring, covering it in more metal. Most of our dryads have died, or worse. If you are willing to help, we would accept anything. They call themselves 'Ogres', and they are great in number, lead by a powerful chief. His magic burns our lands."

We apologize for bringing metal and offer assistance. The Dryad we've met is named "Aih." The spring gives life to the plants and fruit here, and the guardian being blocked means he can't escape his hibernation. We'll need to remove the metal cage around him to help. We can also help by freeing Dryads that are sealed and tortured by the ogres.

The Dryad offers us to stay in the grove for a night, and we're taken to The Wise One's village. Giant tree filled with other Kodama and Shikigami, tons of plant life calling this place home.

Hiromi, Timid Thistle, and Sade each lick the pure essence of magic. Sade has a panic attack, Hiromi's curse and magic goes away, and Timid now has a magical nemesis. The creature has a bonus to attacking me and a penalty to attacking anybody else, and it hates me. It is allies with my enemies.

We are asked to carry metal out of the grove, in the form of loot, of course.

Log
We encountered a magic surge on The Beat, which was handled by kobold guardsman.

We've been asked to investigate the surges by Levethixawin

Nosiferus (kobold) is here to talk things over with the party.

There's been a number of magic surges recently, and the last one caused a nasty confusion effect. After some time looking into it - it's natural, but not exactly natural. We've roughly triangulated the source or location of the surges. We suspect the magic in the area will be weird. It's not a source, per-se, but it amplifies natural magical effects.

After a day of travel, Tik transforms into a lycanthrope for 10 minutes abnormally.
Upon Breatel eating some solid air, a shockwave knocked most of us down.

At the top of a steep hill, Breatel slides down on his shield. At the bottom of the hill, he discovers a few creatures hiding behind rocks.

We fight several aberrations - a couple Akatas, a Shadowless Mass, and a couple Contemplatives. The Shadowless Mass teleports away once its allies are defeated.

After wandering into the cave, we find it to be full of amazing glowing crystals. In the center of the largest part of the cavern lies what seems to be a powerful magic-surging crystal floating above a circular arrangement on the ground.

The Shadowless Mass appears once more, in a larger more potent form, before getting its butt whooped one more time for good.

We report the crystal cave back to Levethixawin, and they find it highly concerning but note that our description is useful.

Sideun has been studying the 5 specimens brought back and determined the following: The creatures were once normal animals, they do not detect as magical, and the tumors inside them either should have already killed them or would have soon. Scouts were sent out to canvas the wilderness, and discovered an area where there was a higher density of these creatures deep in the woods. Go out and investigate, but keep your guard up, as these creatures have proven deadly in the past, and its possible you will encounter variants not yet seen.
* We're headed to a scouted area where more mutations were spotted. Our goal is to determine whether there's some kind of source to the corruption. Some kind of wellspring, if you will.
* 8 hour trek. On approach we see many tracks we could start to follow down.
* Timid Thistle IDs bear tracks, wolf tracks, and bunny tracks.
* We find a dead bear among many dead rabbits. After Bodrukk yeets several dead rabbits into the nearby woods, we find that there are indeed 4 living mutated bears. And 4 mutated wolves :|
* Huge damage from Tinker using Alchemist's Fire on the wolves, which are weak 10 to fire!
* Vreal goes down to a bear in round 2 but we've taken out all the wolves
* Cozin sets a new damage record: 96 damage in one strike, absolutely murderizing a mutant bear.
* We defeat the bears and spend downtime healing
* We continue following tracks and hear mutant badgers off in the distance
* We come across a den with a few mutant badgers
* This seems to be some kind of sinkhole with a large pool of still water
* At the end of the first round of combat, a giant crocodile comes out of the sinkhole
* We take down the first couple badgers
* Timid Thistle trips the huge croc with a crit!
* Cutter Black kills the last badger right in time to avoid it knocking out Bodrukk
* Timid Thistle double-crits the croc for a huge kill
* Bodrukk to Level 7, Timid Thistle to Level 5, Vreal to Level 6
* The water here is clearly the source of corruption. Cozin takes a cauldron of it to test later and sets up some snares. Bodrukk plans to block the path with logs as much as he can to discourage animals from drinking this.
* Cozin traps: Caltrops, 2x Deadweights, Detonating Cures

}}

It’s Thursday afternoon, it’s 80 degrees and overcast, and we all have Laybarons guard duty. The party is walking around the Laybarons, bored out of their skulls.

On Cozin’s suggestion, Maki approaches a random citizen - an older looking gnome tiefling.

“Holy shit you’re small” she exclaims. Perhaps the world’s most awkward interaction.

After much interjection, we rip Maki and Tremla away from the poor innocent person and continue walking forth.

Tremla notes and gets distracted by a white ermine protected by Gentle Repose hanging over somebody’s neck.

We walk around, no suspicious activity of note given the safety of the Laybarons.

With nothing much else to do, we approach a high elf blacksmith. He jumps slightly and puts something in his pocket quickly.

With some goading he takes his hand from his pocket, and there’s a glowing magic rune on there!

It seems to only be a sigil. Grist recognizes this symbol as the mark of a famous assassin!

Turns out, according to Tremla, it’s just a mark from the bar to cut him off.

He goes on his way back to the bar to have the mark removed, while Grist confidently insist’s he’s soon to meet his doom.

After meeting some kobold guards wearing trenchcoats, we set back off to make another round.

We point a blue-skinned lady to a lake in the Trimarket

Cozin seems to think that most people are near immune to fire. Tremla proves this to not be the case by jumping off a roof.

Tremla knocks on the door to Grist’s house and we meet his daughter. She’s happy to see her dad and he sends her back inside.

In discussion about the magicness of dragons, we establish that dragons are not in fact reptiles, that tengu are possibly birds, that there’s no such thing as a fish, and that gnolls hate being compared to hyenas as much as kobolds hate being compared to lizards. Cozin walks off fuming and “patrolling”.

Grist orates the first chapter of a storybook about a famous assassin, turns out the assassin is actually from a children’s series.

A couple of kids are kicking a ball in a street, being watched by a 90 y/o human with blue hair. He speaks slowly and is hard to understand. Blue hair, half shaved, giant chest tat, blue mustache and lots of piercings. Metal as fuck.

Tremla joins the kids playing in the street. She begins teaching them kickball - which they claimed to be playing, but really they were just kicking the ball with no goal or end in sight.

The man falls asleep and falls out of his chair. We knock on the door and meet, presumably, his partner. She’s similarly metal, with a back tat panorama to the god of death. We drag the guy back inside and place him on a mattress on the floor. This place is a bit… crack den. Not quite good enough to be a crack palace.

We keep walking and Tremla nearly falls in the river. Our lunch break is in about 13 minutes - thank the gods.

Turns out Cozin’s a baker! Timid Thistle digs deeper and finds out his favorite thing to bake is bread.

Tremla is carrying around 3 bulk worth of birdseed - enough birdseed to last her 210 days.

Following lunch, we find the road has some barricades with arrows pinged into the sides. We hear fighting and run towards it. It sounds like it’s coming from every direction!

We search on foot and from the roofs. We split in two groups as we see rising dust clouds on opposite sides of the area - Cozin Tremla & Timid, Maki and Grist.

Apparently a magical surge occured during our 30 minute lunch break, causing townsfolk to go wild and violent. The kobold guards handled it. They are awarded medals, and we continue walking in circles for hours.

It’s Thursday afternoon, it’s 80 degrees and overcast, and we all have Laybarons guard duty.

Log
* We volunteer and meet councilman Shiki Moru
* Monitoring a digsite, found one that has some ruins of note
* The ruins were likely built between the last apocolypse and the one prior (60-80 years back)
* The trip is a few days there and back, and ideally we'll be meeting the councilman's contacts at the camp
* Movement away from areas on site. Small earthquake revealed more ruins, no current occupants likely.
* We arrive at a campsite and scout the place out. No sign of undead or other threats, and we set a watch order.
* Nothing of note overnight.
* Smooth travel coming up to the fourth day.
* Shiki Moru provides food, some rations and even some real meat and cheese!
* We arrive at a forest encampment and meet "Lives for Lies" and "Uncovers-The-Truth"
* This group is "SUSS", Society Under Semi-Autonomous Shambles.
* NPCs:
** Merry Mac
** Lizbelle
** Ary
** Violet
* Lives for Lies is a great smuggler of people and items
* Cutter and Shiki Moru talk privately:
** Papers found around the ruins were written in a cipher of undercommon and elvish
** There could be sign of an existing civilization or a cult related to the ruins
* Lives for Lies claims he grew up in ruined city of Yharnin, escaped on a ship attacked by two krakens, that he has a wife and six adopted kids. This dude really loves to tell lies as it turns out.
* Surprising lack of bodies at the ruins, nothing old. Either people didn't die or they were fully destroyed
* After Cutter studies the cipher, he finds it is half instructions and half coordinates.
** Seems to point to a particular area of the ruins * this is the same area that Shiki Moru had in his notes
* Bright Eyes shows up out of nowhere, potentially listening in on Cutter and Moru
* With the world ending so frequently, we're not getting the elves that have lived 500 years. Some elves survive one, even two apocalypses. Elves that live through one almost always hoard like no tomorrow in preparation for the next.
* Uncovers the Truth and violet had caught a stag and are making soup!
* We pair with NPCs on watch. Looking around the camp it seems they've scored coin and archeological finds from other ruins. This seems to be a very well-equipped camp of explorers.
* We dig into some vension for breakfast
* We travel to the dig site. There has been little prior investigation.
* Cliff is about 30 feet tall, potentially an entrance nearby.
* Inscriptions found in a cave inside the cliffs
** When untouched I am worth nearly nothing, yet people live or die by my value. My value is money, yet I can be used and not return. The earth hold me, yet I can come from beyond the skies. Set me in the body, mind, and soul, and see your way forward.
** There's a statue that has three slots for some gem or something
* "Beware the corridor, there are trials of atheleticism and wit".
* We find there are a bunch of traps down this nondescript corridor
* Find some placards on the side of a large cave:
** Right: Right Left Right, and then a pattern most unlike it, Left Left Right
** Left: Praise enlightened one, let your wisdom guide us here, patterns you whisper.
*** This references a famous story of an acolyte of Iori. "The best place to start is the middle, because then you can adjust."
** We follow a line of squares that teleport you back upon stepping in the wrong place. Seems half the puzzle may be ruined
* We find ruins of an old building here, an odd mix of wood and metal construction - not very sturdy.
* We find all sorts of papers, records, formulas, etc. Perhaps there's some information on how to stop apocalypse #9... but we're too late for #8.
* The maps here show other sites to go to
* This is clearly some kind of initiation or test for a group attempting to store information on stopping apocalypses!

Exploration
* The party finds wolf tracks and follows them to a trail of blood
* Boddruk has an identity crisis as Fen questions his title "The Undwarf"
* Fen determines that the blood is not from a humanoid.
* The trail of blood leads us to a small cave. Whatever was bleeding must have been dragged in.
* The wolves dragged a large moose in and they're eating it ravenously, as if they haven't eaten in a week.
* Elasha sneaks up on the wolves to begin combat.
Combat: Party vs 6 wolves
* Elasha is at Dying 3 within the first round.
* Grist valiantly rushes forward to stabilize Elasha.
* Bodrukk takes out the first of the wolves
* Elasha is back to Dying 3 in the second round
* Elasha passes away as she is torn asunder by wolves.
* The party dispatches the wolves without too much further difficulty.
* We pay our respects to Elasha and collect her items to pass forward
* As we take our leave, we hear weird wet snarling from creatures closer to the start of the cave!
* Evergreen takes up a bow since she had no chance to refocus
* Mutated Wolves look like half bullfrog half wolf - very chonky with these gross open pustles on their body.
* Infection with Bloodfire Fever upon being bit
* Bodrukk goes down after taking a surprising number of crits
* Lots of healing resources put towards Bodrukk to get him back up
* Bodrukk goes back down to Dying 3
* Evergreen goes immediately to Dying 3
* Fen brings Bodrukk and Evergreen back up to 7 HP with Heal
* Elasha is at Dying 3 within the first round, in keeping with Tinker tradition.
