Hunt a Gnasher Behemoth.

Log

With the posting of Huntmasker Kjac on the Notice board a 6’2 armoured lady called Mutt that really liked fishes, a dwarf named Kagari with a arm partially made of bamboo due to making a deal with a lich and a little frog with a flower hat that goes by the name Sahona gathered at the Round Table offices. It took two days for the party to get to Ram’s Gate. A Camp built near but outside of the leyline anomaly. At the camp, they were led to a warehouse where the cache of the previous party was left. Sahona traded mushrooms for a fishing pole for Mutt and some climbing kits for the rest of the group. With 2 unknown plants, the group heads out.

  • The two plants were later identified as Slayer’s boon and Ironthistle
  • Slayer’s boon: Can be made into a tonic that can improve a Hunter's weapon attack or into an Infernal Grenade with the right additional components.
  • Ironthistle: Can make a tonic that enhances a Hunter's protection from harm. (Kinda looks like a dandelion but has the texture of iron wool)

Group came across a river of fire(not lava). Mutt tried fishing but the fire destroyed their fishing pole. As the pole burned, they noticed a creature slightly sticking out of the fire to bite onto the metal hook. Without delay, Mutt vaulted off the ledge and landed right on top of the creature to drag them to the opposite ledge. While Mutt was attempting to put out the fire on their armor, the obsidian colored fish tried to make a run but was stopped by Sahona’s Electric Arc.

  • It was determined that the black fish was the last of its kind but could be made into some sort of Emulation rune and later was turned into a Molten rune
  • +1 Molten rune: creates droplets of Mutt’s Musk that when interacted with will give fire res

During the night, the team gets attacked by 3 medium sized beavers. The group learned that they had a stomp attack and they were able to trip people whenever they made any sudden movements around it. Two died and the last out ran away with four more that were waiting in the forest. 2 monster parts were successfully harvested.

  • Gnasher Hide
  • Gnasher Shinplate

In the morning, Sahona gathered enough Aether essence for the group to stay mostly undetected for the rest of the day. The party stumbled upon a group of broken trees. Their cores were missing. They were able to determine that the creature that made this was probably dextrous and strong while not having a very high willpower. With last night’s fight, the team also determined that the creature probably doesn’t have darkvision.

Walking down the path that curled around a mesa, the group walked into a blueish mist that originated from some blue liquids coming out of nearby geysers. The mist heightened some of their senses.

Party was able to learn:

    • The Stomp attack has a 10ft emanation
  • The tail has a 10ft reach
  • The AC of the body is 16
  • The tail has an AC of 18

Continuing their adventures, they stumbled across a dark metallic dome with a broken door. Removing the door exposed a cavity with a ladder leading down. The ladder led down into a bunker separated by a portal. On the other side of the portal was a room with a large Glyph of Warding on the floor that would summon a Floating Flame that would make its way to the opening of the bunker. Luckily, the party was able to grab a few things from the room with the help of Lunaris’ Telekinetic Hand. After some fiddling with the handful of devices that were found in the bunker, Lunaris was able to make a Stunning Vigor rune.

  • Stunning Vigor rune: Staggering a Behemoth will make you recover some HP.

Later that day, the group spotted some birds flying by either leading or getting chased by a cloud of fish. Two were shot down by Electric Arc, one was brought down with an Elemental Blast and one was baited close enough with a dancing Light for Mutt to catch. Trying to find a way to keep the fish as it was getting Mutt’s back wet, Lunaris tied a rope on the fish’s tail before handing it over to a happy Mutt. To keep it alive overnight, Slayzo mentioned that this type of fish usually survived on snowflakes found higher in the sky so Kagari made sure to cast a Snowball for it to feed on.

When the group woke up the next morning, they thought that the fish was dead as it was simply laying down in a puddle of water until we made some noise and it woke up, flying back up while reforming a small cloud around their body. The fish escaped catching everyone off-guard. The group spent a good amount of time successfully capturing it again. Taking a breather in the shade of the trees, the fish went into a panic after looking up and knocked itself out diving into the ground. As the party tried to figure out what the fish saw, they spotted a huge owl flying completely silently over them. It was probably the infamous Shriek that they heard about at the camp. Waiting for a good amount of time to pass, making sure the owl hadn’t spotted them, the party pushed on past a large area that was affected by a massive Silence spell to then follow a river which led to a giant den. A Gnasher Behemoth was hiding inside, fixated on the party. As soon as Sahona casted Runic Weapon on Mutt’s Dwarven Dorn-Dergar, the Gnasher let out a roar to alert the nearby lesser Gnashers and the party went into combat.

Before charging in, Mutt was Englarged by Sahona and after getting tripped back to back by the Behemoth’s tail, slammed down on it with so much strength that it simply stopped working. They also managed to prevent Lunaris from going down and to show her appreciation, Soothed Mutt back up when they went unconscious. Seeing Mutt go down, Sahona took upon themselves to land a finishing hit with their Gouging Claw. At that point, the minions were rapidly getting closer but seeing the Behemoth get slain, they quickly retreated.

During the fight, the party was able to learn a few things.

  • Gnashers cannot be staggered
  • The tail is weak to slashing
  • The tail has a cone attack
  • They have a perception of 14
  • The creature would frenzy once they lost half their HP
  • Frenzy gives the Behemoth temporary HP and a damage boost but they also get a penalty to their AC.

Taking their time to harvest and inspect the remains, the group obtained the formulas to make a Raging Repeater(gun) that didn’t need free hands to reload as it uses aether energy as ammo and a Gnasher’s Cap[2]. With the successful hunt, the party made their way back to Camp.

Before reaching their destination, as they crossed the limits of the corrupted area, the fish that Mutt was keeping as a pet dropped to the floor and started flopping around. It could not fly outside of the leyline enhanced space. They ran quickly to the camp to put it in a bowl of water only to see it start drowning. With a heavy heart, Mutt decide to let it go at the border. The fish, grateful to be let go, waved goodbye before flying off. As it was getting further away, the fish slowly mutated into a Behemoth. At the camp, the party informed the Huntmaster of their sighting of the Shriek and the team was rewarded with 40 gold each.
