Kora Caroli is an Associate of the Round Table.

Appearance

Kora is a merfolk of below average height - difficult to pin down based on tail length, especially when she’s submerged in water - with flowing, sea-green hair and mildly tanned humanoid skin. She is lean and bears no noticeable muscle tone, evidently posing no brute threat of her own. Despite Kora’s abyssal heritage, her mermaid features seem about like what most surface dwellers would imagine in a beguiling woman of early-mid 20s, aside from gleaming eyes and a dimly lit lower half. Her attire leave much to be desired for protection, consisting of a translucent skin-color top for her arms and chest along with a gold seashell bra and necklace. One cannot forget the ring on, oddly, her right index finger, nor earrings hidden by her luscious locks of hair. Her tail by contrast is silvery blue; all this gives off the impression that Kora is dressed for social gatherings rather than adventuring. Were she to be deprived of sufficient hydration for a long period of time, she would gradually strike as pale, ill, and malnourished. However, she is more often than not situated in a Supramarine Chair, making such a scenario unlikely.

Upon unleashing her psyche, Kora’s entire body and apparel become more translucent. In turn, numerous particles over her skin emanate light, allowing her to shine like a constellation on a moonless night. Her tail especially glows as if it was the brightest asterism or sub-pattern of the bunch. This light ensures that no one can miss the mermaid in a packed crowd. Visual effects surrounding her head also appear to materialize for observers when she doles spells and other effects. Once this emotional state peters out, Kora returns to her normal look albeit with her hair disheveled and face grown weary.

Background

Kora is a merfolk psychic who appears more interested in socializing and learning about other surface-dwellers than anything. She does not appear to be open about the finer details of her past, though she hails from the abyssal region of the northern sea and has the typical nuclear family standard of a mother, father, and one sibling (sister to be exact). Additionally, she had gone through seven different exes, though only the seventh one truly meant something to her. After experiencing a nightmare voyage via a strong current - though not to the same degree as [The Ripper], Kora was found unconscious on a shore from the north edge of Onadbyr by an elderly rock dwarf named Emeryl Keller. He was so kind as to keep Kora safe and introduce her to the basics of the above-water society.

Once Kora got a handle on what her new life would be going forward, she realized her talents could potentially prove useful to others. Perhaps this was her way of atonement for leaving behind a rather sordid legacy back home. Emeryl suggested that she seek out adventure at a place he once lived nearby called Desperate Hope, which was way southeast from where he found her. Kora would have the oh-so minor issue of not being able to get there on her own at a reasonable pace, given her movement on land being no better than a snail’s pace. Emeryl was happy to lend her a few trinkets for the sake of keeping her hydrated and moving around at a pace equal to his - for a monetary fee. Amused and bemused, Kora accepted the old dwarf’s deal and set out to this outpost, where along the way she would earn enough to get by with her song, social grace, and maybe an iota of deception towards the intermittent gullible admirer. This got the mermaid enough acclaim to establish connections - connections that got her associate status with the Round Table. There was not really anything Kora was immediately needed for at the time (not helping her case was her apparent delicacy), so she continued to trudge to her recommended destination. As Kora adventures in hopes of acclimating to her new calling, she cannot help but desire to one day reunite with her family and old flame.

Personality

Kora is a flirty spirit with a mild hedonistic streak and an addiction to gambling. She lives for thrills, and she would like nothing more than to open others up to her worldview. Do not be fooled: she is mentally very adept and is aware of her limits. It does not matter to her what someone was born as, for anyone could make a wonderful friend as long as they are polite! Etiquette was one of the lessons drilled into Kora’s head when she was a wee girl, as was confidence. She wants to see to it that anyone with emotional strife can come to honestly accept themselves - even if she has to break into song! There is no better way to study above sea level.

This is not to say Kora lacks a bias towards her ideal s/o. She is more enamored toward strong, burly athletes who are reliable and could sweep her off her tail. Literal or metaphorical sense, the answer is a resounding yes. As her last relationship ended for reasons outside both parties’ control, Kora does not wish to relive a particular moment. That her ideal is strong enough to “save the day” feels like a must. The mermaid princess would be less impressed, however, by anyone who is too much of a stickler, a scoundrel, or is a menace to aquatic life. Being rather physically weak herself, Kora has an especially sour spot for anyone who slights the defenseless. Her continued hope is that whoever she is with, they will apply the elbow grease for her; somatic exertion in her mind is bad for her complexion.

For all her insistence of lifting others’ morale, Kora is hypocritical in that, deep down, she forces her smile due to being fraught with the regret of failing to uphold her past responsibilities. She is not comfortable sharing, but even Kora has a tell: it derives from her gambling proclivity.

Trivia

  • "Kora Caroli" is a corruption of the Cor Caroli binary star or Alpha Canum Venaticorum. Cor Caroli is the brightest out of the Canes Venatici - though this does not say much since the constellation as a whole is not relatively bright when compared to others. Other merfolk she knows take from additional star / constellation names, or corruptions of said names.
  • Prior to the start of her adventure, Kora had managed a steady 55% win rate in most luck-based card gambles versus a single opponent, thanks to her ability to read subconscious tells. She hopes to improve this further should old habits die hard and her focus is on the game.
  • In the world of romance, gender is no obstacle to this diva, nor is a limit to how many others she is with in a relationship. Kora is mindful, however, and wants any of her beloved to be happy, unwilling to enter uncharted territory behind closed doors. Ironic as a professional deceiver with a conspiratorial glance, she has standards.
  • Kora should try ASMR sometime. She would slay at silent whispering and exposing feel-good triggers.
  • She is trying to go vegan. Despite her respect for wild sea life, the craving for a fish meal gets the better of her every now and then.
