Appearance

Professor Boomslang Bones is a broad-shouldered Great Kholo who sports a tome, whip, and a big toothy grin. He is scruffy looking and would not look out of place in a dark alley or shady bar, but he surprises people with his upbeat and positive personality. He wears a vest with torn sleeves, a tattered mantle, and all the belts and pockets he could think to wear. On his hip is holstered his ‘Ma’s femur and on the other side he has his Boomerang for “far-away beasties”.

Background

“Professor” Boomslang Bones started life in a Kholo village to the southwest. He was known as Gary Bones (named after the sharptoothed fish, Gar) and quickly grew curious about the shattered world he found himself in. He absorbed all the stories his grandma, Mrs Bones, told him, especially after she became his sole caretaker at a young age. He suffered through her lectures and scoldings, especially when he got into trouble, but he learned all of the folk-stories and herbal healing that he could from her. When she died, he kept her femur that he always kept on him to always remember her wisdom. Since he had little ties to his village, he set out upon the wide world to discover what new stories are waiting to be uncovered.

He started exploring abandoned ruins on his own, miraculously making it out unscathed, and found a liking to using a whip for self defense due to its harsh sting and range. He made notes of what all he could understand and told stories to all who would listen. Bones saw all the hardships the world was facing and made it his life’s mission to uncover all the hidden and lost knowledge and treasure from the past. “Better someone make use of it: the dead sure aren’t!”, he’d like to say. He didn’t care much for pleasantries or what he saw as obtrusive traditions, so he found himself in the company of criminals for his next score on the next interesting item or story.

He landed himself in hot water, however, when he raided what he thought was an ancient tomb, but was really an active burial site for the local people. The line between Archeology and grave robbing is a line that Bones can’t see. He had found a magnificently decorated book from an exonerated deceased hunter that he pocketed before he suddenly found himself chased out of town by the locals. He barely escaped custody and high tailed it out of the region, fearful that people from that town would hunt him down “just for using a book they threw out”. The book started as a simple bestiary, but Bones took it upon himself to add further notes on creatures he encountered, decorating it cover to cover with bits of plants and animal bones and teeth. After all his modifications, the once fancy book is now dog-eared and stained beyond repair, making it worthless to all but Bones himself. Somehow he is able to read his scribblings and remember when he made a mark on a page to recall Esoteric details of his stories.

As he always had a liking for snakes, he then coined himself Boomslang, after a venomous tree snake, to match his weapon of choice and to distance himself from his previous ‘crime’. Later on during his travels, he came upon a strange abandoned place that once was a school, and found a piece of paper that said it was a degree in Archeology. He loved the sound of it, so he crossed out the old name on the paper and put his own, completing his name as “Professor” Boomslang Bones. Though he still doesn’t know what PhD means. Professor Bones has finally found himself in Onadbyr and eagerly signed up to join the Associates. Getting to fight monsters, make stories, and to read all the stories of other people is everything he could ask for! He’s sure the renowned reputation he’ll get as an Associate will overcome any repercussions of his ill-gotten tome. One day, he hopes he can open a museum to showcase his findings to the whole city. Because if there’s an unattended artifact out there that needs saving, he’ll say: “It belongs in a museum! … My museum!”

Personality

His size and demeanor give false impressions for people first meeting him. It often seems like he is laughing sinisterly at people, but really he just remembered something funny and is having a good time. He is optimistic and tries to raise everyone's spirits, eager to tie an event back to one of his stories. While he doesn't care if his stories are 100% true, he wants to provide reliable and valuable information and lessons to those who listen to him. He's happy to help out those in need and goes out of his way to make sure people are on the right track.

Trivia

  • His birth-name is Gary, named after a type of fish called Gar. This is also a reference to the real-life metropolis known as Gary, Indiana.
  • He is a big fan of snakes but he respects their dangerous nature.
