During the course of the game characters may die or retire.

Death

When a character is dead at the end of an Expedition, it must be decided if an effort will be made to resurrect them. If a character cannot be saved then they are laid to rest.

  • The player and Storytellers will discuss what becomes of the characters' belongings including any magic items, gold, and extraordinary rewards.
  • The player receives free XP equal to the XP the character had at their death (including the session that killed them). This can be easily calculated as 1000*(level-1)+residual XP. This is free XP, which can be applied to existing characters (up to 5000 per character), as well as to any amount of new characters, provided the player has the karma/character slots. Remember that the deceased character leaves an open character slot.

When making a new character after a death, you are given an amount of starting gold equal to their level on the Character Wealth table. This gold can be used to purchase any Common items, but only 15gp worth can be used on Uncommon or Rare items (the same amount as a level 1).

  • If there is a discrepancy between the Total Wealth the deceased character had, and the starting gold the new character(s) start with, items or gold may be gifted/donated to other Associates in an amount up to the difference in wealth. This Associate must be controlled by a different player, at Firekeeper discretion. For example, if a character died with 5000gp worth of Total Wealth, and the new character's starting gold was 4500, the deceased character could transfer 500gp worth of items or gold to other Associates.
  • The player may also choose to will or gift items of higher value- in this case, the extra gold value will be deducted from the new character(s)'s starting gold.
  • Any remaining items that might be useful to other Associates can be sold to Rocco's without penalty (for example, Uncommon or Rare items that would otherwise not be available).

Note: New characters created as a result of death or retirement must go through the same approval process as a new level 1 character, shown here.

Retirement

A player may decide their characters' story has reached its natural conclusion or that they can no longer go on Expeditions for one reason or another. In this event the player can open a ticket to retire their character.

  • A retired character keeps all their equipment indefinitely. They may choose to gift or sell items they have before leaving. They must have an in-world reason for doing so, and the decision is open to Storyteller veto.
  • The player receives free XP equal to the XP the character had upon retirement. This can be easily calculated as 1000*(level-1)+residual XP. This is free XP, which can be applied to existing characters (up to 5000 per character), as well as to any amount of new characters, provided the player has the karma/character slots. Remember that the retired character leaves an open character slot.
  • Any new character will start with gold equal to their level on the Character Wealth table. This gold can be used to purchase any Common items, but only 15gp worth can be used on Uncommon or Rare items (the same amount as a level 1). Any unused gold may remain in their inventory.

Note: New characters created as a result of death or retirement must go through the same approval process as a new level 1 character, shown here.

Un-Retirement

If the player decides the character should re-join as a playable character, the following applies:

  • The character fills an existing empty character slot. This may be the spot created by a dead or retired character, in which case the new character becomes whichever level is granted by the slot. If a new character slot is used without any free XP, the character is made at level 1.
  • The character has all equipment they left with. If they no longer meet the level requirement for equipment, they may keep it in their inventory but may not use it until they meet the minimum requirements.
  • Un-retired characters do not receive full starting gold, as they retain their previous inventory; however, they may add an amount of gold equal to their level on the Character Wealth table MINUS their Total Wealth, if it is positive. For example, if a character starts at level 6 (normal starting wealth 450gp), but the character only had 300gp of wealth prior to their initial retirement, that character would gain an additional 150gp upon un-retirement.
