The party delves into Drake's basement to investigate where the tunnel leaves.

Log

On a fine summer day myself and Jez, Atticus, Petal, Jade, Omen, Braoin, Bonko, Barbell, and Goldberry traveled a short ways outside the city to the house of mister Drake, who hired us to investigate "snake folk" in his basement. I'll admit that my interest was piqued at the mention of snake folk, I haven't met any outside of our small community, but I was surprised to see how many fellow associates had joined me in accepting such a task. Bonko seemed to take a liking to me, and spent the first while riding on my shoulder. I had to convince him to do so, lest he run ahead of the heard.

We met with Drake and his roommate, an apparent fiend named Reggie, who we were told "likes secrets." After a bit of chat, we made our way into the tunnels beneath his house, leaving Drake and Reggie behind at the "campsite". Barbell took the lead, then Atticus and I, with Bonko on my shoulder. The others followed not far behind. We weren't walking long when we came across a group of serpentfolk, apparently walking towards us. I approached ahead of the rest and spoke to them in Sakvroth, the language of serpentfolk. To my pleasant surprise, we were not forced to come to blows. They told us they were trying to leave the tunnels, and I offered to escort them to the surface, lest Drake or someone else think it to be an invasion. Drake seemed unbothered, and the leader of the serpentfolk stayed behind at the "campsite" while the rest explored the surface. We learned that there were more of them back at their base, and the leader penned a letter that we could deliver to them letting them know they found a path to the surface.

Once again we made our way through the tunnels before coming across a fork in the path. We choose the one that looks like a worm's tunnel, and due to our loud footsteps eventually arouse the worm. At the encouragement of those more knowledgeable about such things, we all turned around and left as quickly as we could manage. Brave Barbell sacrificed himself by distracting the juvenile worm. The adult worm hit me square in the head with a large rock before I could escape, and I don't know how but between Braoin and Jade's magic I managed to just barely stay standing.

Once we escaped, Petal took some time to treat my wounds while Bonko patches up Omen. Despite having just lost his familiar, Omen doesn't seem too bothered.

Those more knowledgeable deduce that the worm can sense our movements through the stone, and we elect to stick around for about an hour more. Petal fixes up my wounds some more before we run away from where we last saw the worm. Jez summons a giant centipede behind us to hopefully simulate our many feet going the opposite direction. It served as a distraction for a moment before being torn apart by the juvenile worm.

Tired of running, we prepare ourselves for a fight. Atticus rushes in, under the protection of Petal's tree, but the tree cannot keep the beast from swallowing him whole. Jade, Goldberry and I follow, and through our combined power we manage to beat the beast into submission before cutting a bloodied Atticus from its middle. After that ordeal we elect to retreat for the day, regaining our wits and our resources. Drake pays us handsomely for a job well done. Unfortunately we were unable to locate Soil- the serpentfolk leader-'s kin, so I returned him the envelope with the assurance that other, more capable associates would return to deliver it.
