Grist Vanafeld, one of the Associates of the Round Table, was born and lived most of his life in the Broken Settlement deep within the Wood of Forgotten Whispers. He was born and raised there with his wife, Morane. A Devastating Marauder attack destroyed most of the settlement, and either maimed or killed a majority of the settlement's residents. Grist's wife, Morane, was seriously injured. She was on the brink of death when a group of divine entities made contact with Grist. They called themselves The War Council. They promised to keep her alive, but in exchange, he had to become their Divine Champion, in charge of rebuilding the world, one body at a time. Grist accepted this deal and became The Blade of the Council.

Grist Vanafeld moved to Onadbyr five years ago. During that time, he has been helping with a wide variety of manual labor. While he was working, his daughter, Rosette, takes care of her mother, Morane. Morane is still very weak despite the divine healing she has received. Grist assumes this is intentional because the War Council holds her life in their hands. If Grist were to disobey the unanimous orders of the War Council, then Morane would begin to die and only stop dying once Grist agrees to whatever orders the council gives him. His first major order since he moved to Onadbyr. He was order to do what he hates most. He was ordered to kill.
