It's been years since I left the Old Country and I honestly didn't expect that I would ever be returning after what Ko and Hiromi shared with me. Here we are though. Going back home. Oh boy. I don't know if I'm ready for this.
Damian, Illiam, Raijin, and I were asked by Satori to accompany Maki on this trip to protect her from "whatever she antagonizes and from herself". We're heading for the mountains of Chen Zhi. I've never had the opportunity to go there. Something about the extreme danger of the area always kept me from visiting.
The first half of the trip was uneventful. Most of our group the time was spent working on various projects or on training. I was able to exchange spell theory with Illiam and Raijin and and also shared some of the new tattoo formulae that I've been working on over the last several months with Raijin. There was a lot of conversation and bonding.
We eventually do come within sight of the Wall of Heaven. One of the mountains, Sun Wukong's divine peak, was missing. There were no indications about what might have happened to the peak but as we came closer, we found quite a few craters where the mountain once stood. There were trace amounts of adamantine at the base of the craters. We'll have to return later to collect the traces for Onadbyr.
We were greeted by the warhorns of an Oni clan when we climbed up out of the crater. The Mitsubishi clan. Typical oni warband, attacking as soon as they see any potential victims. We made a strong first strike and killed several of them before they could even do anything. Two oni escaped, one fleeing before they even reached us.
We traveled deeper into the Old Country, passing within sight of the road leading home. Moving south, we found that many of the bridges that normally allowed passage were in ruins. We did eventually find a narrow bridge that we were able to cross (using magic to get the cart across). Eventually we reached our destination, a monastery at the top of the mountain.
There were two disciples, Gekiko and Ryokao, who accepted a challenge from Maki and Raijin on behalf of the Monastaery of Unfolding Winds. The challenge is close, but Maki came out as the last combatant standing. We were greeted by the Gekiko and Ryokao's master, Nobukazu. It seems that Nobukazu is familiar with Maki's mother, who is one of the four Oni daimyo alongside Yabu, Nabukazu, and Akuma who helped to slay the previous leader of the oni, Inma. He also invited Maki and the rest of us to study with him.
