Benefits

Prepared Casters

If you have a spellbook (such as Wizard, Magus), Learning a Spell lets you add the spell to your spellbook, giving you access to it during subsequent daily preparations.

If you prepare spells from a list (such as Cleric, Druid), Learning a Spell allows you to prepare Uncommon or Rare spells that you wouldn't normally be able to.

Spontaneous Casters

If you have a spell repertoire (such as Sorcerer, Oracle), Learning a Spell allows you to select Uncommon or Rare spells when you add or swap spells. Note that you will not gain access to the spell until you would normally be able to select a spell, such as on level up or retraining.

Accessing New Spells

New spells can be accessed in one of the following ways:

  • Speaking with someone who knows the spell
  • Access to the spell written in a spellbook
  • Access to a scroll of that spell

Learn a Spell

Learning a Spell is an Exploration action that normally takes place during Downtime. It takes 1 hour per level of the spell, during which you must remain in conversation with a person who knows the spell or have the magical writing in your possession. Learning a Spell also has a material cost, as shown in the table below.

Once all other requirements are met, roll a skill check using the skill that corresponds to your tradition. You may only learn spells of a tradition you have access to. If you can cast spells of multiple traditions, you can Learn a Spell of any of those traditions, but you must use the corresponding skill to do so. For example, if you were a cleric with the bard multiclass archetype, you couldn't use Religion to add an occult spell to your bardic spell repertoire. The DC of the roll can be found in the table above, and the skill for each tradition can be found in the table below.
