The Associates are hired to investigate a Mayor of suspected corruption and find evidence, if any, of his crimes.

Log

The party gathers in Onabyr in order to hear the details of the job from Kelsy, their contact. They board a cart and spend the next 3 days traveling to Fellwood. During the trip, Kelsy explains that Fellwood had been a rather average, quaint town to live in. But a few years a new Mayor took over, and while he was not that likable he did seem to run the town well. However, in the last year, things have gotten worse. Taxes have been raised but there has been no notable improvement to the town, and while responsible for the protection of nearby villages from local monsters, he has done less than usual to protect them. Visiting merchants have become fewer as well, complaining of high taxes. A group of citizens suspects corruption and would like us to investigate and if we find proof, they can replace him. Sarah, a former tutor of the mayor's daughter, and now a maid in the manor, is our inside contact.

The party hides their weapons and combat gear in a barrel in the cart before entering the city so as to avoid suspicion. The guards at the gate ask a few questions and do a brief inspection but they do not find anything suspicious and wave the wagon through. The party, particularly Arkes, who had visited the town before, noticed the town seemed more impoverished than before, with more beggars, fewer goods for sale and the town generally more run down.

The party spends some time visiting various parts of the city, including the market, the lumber mill, the slum and the mayor's mansion. The town has indeed started getting worse in general. The manor is surrounded by a 10 foot wall with a very large courtyard inside with guards at the gate and patrolling the sides. The party then returns to the inn to meet with the rest of the group.

Sarah and Bessa work in the Mayors manor. They provide us a hand written map, and say they think the mayor is trying to become a official noble, and has been hosting noble guests. The party plans on climbing the outer wall with a ladder and then using some spells to reach the 3rd floor office directly, in the meantime Laciena will disguise herself as a maid and enter the mansion in order to search the first floor and provide a distraction if needed.

Laciena manages to infiltrate the mansion, getting past the guard, captain of the guard and the other maids. The rest of the party manages to reach the office through the window successfully and get in, although Kubo is unable to see due to being the only one without darkvision. Laciena continued her investigation and managed to fool another guard and gain entry into the May's late daughter's room. The group in the study found gems, gold, magic items and a number of papers of transactions that did not seem immediately suspicious other than a number of nobles have visited the mansion. Kubo uses detect magic to sweep the room and finds a hidden safe on the south wall that is hidden by an illusion. Storan manages to crack the safe and get it open but after doing another detect magic Kubo senses more magic on the safe and opens it with telekinetic hand, which sets off an electric trap that destroys the hand but does not sound an alarm. There were three thick books within the safe, that Kubo determined were written in a code of some sort that would take time to decipher, but they did appear to be ledgers of some sort. The party determined these were likely what they were looking for and after doing one last check of the room, and noticing that the door to the study was trapped, they made their exit out the window, closing it behind them and leaving no evidence of how they entered.

Laciena searched the daughter's bedroom, finding some gold and letters from suitors and then manages to escape out the sewers. The party meets back at the inn and work throughout the rest of the night to decipher the ledgers. They reveal the mayor has been embezzling money from the sale of lumber to buy luxurious gifts for nobles. Even worse, the mayor has been selling off poorer citizens as slaves, although the buyers were not named and were only noted with initials. They also noted how taxes were levied extremely high on merchants. As soon as dawn broke, alarms went off in the city which put the city in lockdown. Kelsy said she would be spreading word of the Mayors crimes and the city would rise up but she would like to hire the the party to provide muscle for the town when they overthrew the mayor. The party agreed and would prepare for the upcoming fight.
