Associates gather to do a favor for an old woman to find her cat.
Log
The following is an excerpt from a letter delivered from Keira's residence to a certain village. As this is an unofficial log, the contents are not logged with the Round Table Council, but a similar, much more to-the-point record of events is also recorded in Keira's personal journal
...and on the day I write this letter to you, I even was propositioned for a personal favor while grocery shopping. Living in a settlement again has been strange after so long, but I've definitely missed having a place to simply get food without having to hunt and forage. And before you ask, yes I have been eating a well-balanced diet. I'm more concerned about yours, and how I haven't heard back from you in months. I definitely understand, but I can't help but worry about you. When the opportunity comes, I'll be visiting.
This favor wouldn't even be noteworthy if it weren't for who else had responded and where it ended up taking us. Granny Matilda, as she was known, even acknowledged that practically a small army had assembled to find her missing cat. Aside from myself, there was Melfyra and Iza - I've written about them to you before - alongside Lazarus, an odd man concerned with his appearance but not his reputation, and Boophis - a Grippli! Did you ever meet a Grippli, before the Collapse? I've heard there's a small tribe of them assembled here in Onadbyr.
Matilda's house was overwhelming to the senses, she's definitely insane... but harmless to anyone aside from her cats. Her whole block reeked of cat piss, and her house was obviously no exception. She had a cat bed made of shed cat fur, and taxidermied - stuffed corpses - cats. She said they were all Tiberus, which was also the name of the cat we were looking for. We began our search nearby, and Boophis uncorks a concoction of some sorts, which immediately attracts the attention of 19 cats. I know it was 19 cats, because I counted them all. The cats began to swarm around Boophis and began to aggressively approach Adyra, Melfyra's wolf. Lazarus decided to take a nap in the park or something - this seemed to be something he took to naturally, and the rest of us attempted to pet the cats. This didn't end up going well, and Boophis managed to lead them them away to Pettyport. This will surely have no ramifications on their fishing industry.
Melfyra seemed to trip on a flat surface and ended up in a ditch next to a boarded-up warehouse, where we heard distant cries of a cat. Iza continues proving herself useful, and de-boards the front door, leading us to a big hole in the ground. With the help of ropes, we managed to descend under the city, to discover an abnormally cold cave, cold even for how deep underground we went. We discovered the cat near a large door, and while Boophis was content to leave with the cat, Iza and I were attracted to the sense of adventure and treasure. Upon the door was written "Woman in winter, bring mother mammoth to flow", which no one knew what that meant. Opening the door revealed 4 frozen suits of armor, which seemed to animate at our arrival. Entering the room seemed to anger them, so we began dispatching them. Our initial plan to stay outside of the room and destroy them from afar, where they won't pursue us, seemingly failed when they learned to close the door on us. The one time I don't bring fire magic, we enter an ice cave and fight icy armor. Lazarus and Boophis earn their keep with their own fire magic, and while it's close, we do manage to temporarily dismantle the armor with only moderate injuries. It is, however, readily obvious as the fight proceeds and as we tended to our wounds after that these armors were reforming. The room contained 2 doors, one door in the front of the room had some ominous noises behind it, and a side door was quiet and led deeper into this catacomb. Boophis again expressed his desire to turn around, but acquiesced to the group as we decided to venture deeper.
The stairs deeper were slick with ice, so our fire magicians clear the path slowly. The next room is empty, aside from some disconcertingly humanoid sized cages, and as we round the next corner on the next set of stairs, we come across more frost creatures. These ones had more formidable offenses, but were also substantially less durable than the rime armors we faced on the floor above. We also faced a challenge of balance, as we hadn't cleared the next stairs of ice. Iza, Boophis and I bravely make our way to our new targets, but Iza unfortunately takes a grievous wound to her chest. Laz and Melfyra slowly make their way forward as we do our best to keep Iza safe and attempt to eliminate the creatures. Iza manages to dispatch one right after waking up from her wounds, and finishes the last one off after Laz and I weaken it considerably.
The room contained an illusion of some sort, and almost tempted me into a pit full of treasure. It was certainly too good to be true, and with daylight above surely running low, we turned back around. Of course, by this time, the frost armors in the first room had already reformed, but they were only hostile while inside the room, so all we had to do was dash from the one door to the other. Near the entrance, Tibby - the cat we were sent to pick up, this was his nickname - was curled up and somehow had managed to pick up all the jewelry, so we collected our spoils, and returned to the surface. This cave had more to see, more secrets to unravel, and surely more treasure to be had. I'm sending you a bit of coin that we earned pawning off these necklaces (you know me, I kept one for my collection), I'm sure Ricky will let you exchange it for whatever stupid currency he's trying to make there. You don't need to send me a full letter like the ones I send you back.
And just to make sure you stop worrying, I'm picking up new tricks. I'm learning to patch myself up just in case, but Onadbyr has some wonderful healers around, and so many wonderful people. It's a much different experience from the village, and so many more faces - and kinds of faces abound. I've finally settled in, but there's still so much space in my house. You really should come to visit, or just come move in here and retire. Even an old man like you probably has some tricks to teach some of these pups...
The letter continues on, and is eventually delivered by Mayel. Without the mail returned, Keira's hopes that "no news is good news" begins to wear down. In the coming months, no return letter comes.
