There's still so much to do for Qualily and myself to get settled into town, when she suddenly comes in and tells me she's signed me up for an expedition. After the fact, yeah, it was nice to get out of the house instead of helping with repairs to the house and being coated in dust.
A local gladiator pit made a request for some more brave associates to show up and show off. Other than myself, we had a young (I think?) dwarf, a religious fanatic and his (probably un-)loyal piece of sun-dried jerky, and a robot dog. There really are so many different kinds of people in here, compared to back home...
We were brought in for the King of the Kobolds event, and going back through the older logs, I see that the city has sent associates here not just several other times, but has also participated in this kind of event. Apparently the Reverend Elza got his hands on some artifact that a local tribe of Kobolds wants back, but before that he wants us to play "tag" with a giant zombie, to show that we know how to handle ourselves.
I really didn't want to be touched by that thing, but I figured the best way to stop that thing from tagging us was to put it down for good, and I think the dog, the King of Dance, had the same idea. I was sticking it like a pincushion, but it was just so big that it was as if my arrows were barely hurting it. Omen's thing got caught, and then later on Cass got caught, but we were able to take it down within a minute and were approved to take on the main event. We also figured out that the rock had some kind of rejuvenating quality, which tracks from the previous King of the Kobolds event.
Elza told us that since the last time, the Kobolds decided they'd rather blow up their rock instead of letting us have it. When the event started and we introduced ourselves to the crowd, the Kobolds began funneling in and it became apparent that what the Reverend told us was true - one of them was carrying a bomb! It seemed really heavy, like I definitely couldn't carry it, but they also seemed to struggle with it. As their friends began rushing us, the carrier was struggling to move. I moved my way away from the rushing Kobolds and sniped the carrier while the others got the remaining Kobolds. Cass could only knock one of them out, but the rock was even rejuvenating the Kobolds, so I took the shot to kill it before it could get back up.
Another wave of Kobolds showed up, coming from different angles this time, and bringing both a spellcaster 'and' ranged support. I took the opportunity to take cover near a palisade in the arena, and tried to take out their mage, but he seemed to be made of slightly tougher stuff. KOD tried to pick up the bomb, but he became so slow that he couldn't get away and was swarmed by Kobolds. Cass ran up near the group I was hiding from with the spellcaster, but he seemed to cast a spell on one of their crossbows. Seeing the bomb was a danger again, I left the ranged threats to Cass, as Omen and I went to support KOD and the bomb. Their new bomb runner fell in combat, but one of the remaining Kobolds pushed the bomb close to the rock and activated it!
We had to do something about that, and from the other end, I hear Cass struggling. I could tell from its construction that we only had a dozen or so seconds to do something, so KOD picked it back up to try and get it away from the rock, but I was close enough to run in and, thanks to understanding the bomb a bit, I was able to pull the right wire to disarm the explosive. With the beeping done, the mage screams out about failing again and runs extremely quickly out of the arena. We finish up the remaining Kobolds, and I even manage to kill the last straggler as he tried to escape. We had successfully protected the site and rock, but the crowd's cheering died out when we went to go help Cass, only to discover she had died from an injury from the enchanted crossbow. Feeling the mood in the arena, I play up the tragedy, and I am genuinely sad she died... but I also barely knew this woman. Oh well. The Rev paid us for our performance, and even let KOD take the bomb back home for some reason. Hopefully it stays disarmed, I probably won't be able to get there in time again, since I don't even know where KOD lives.
As we were returning back to the city, there was some strange blue Kobold who had stashed themselves in the cart. Not sure what they were doing in there. They slept like a log the entire way home, so we just kinda left them there, and they're probably in town now.
