Unfortunately, we began the fight on the back foot. An unfortunate branch snapped quite loudly, alerting the boars to our presence, despite my attempts at being stealthy. About 10 boars of varying sizes and apparent ferocity stood between us and the village. It was quite the horde. Samara had a bright idea that may have cost her life directly - a mutagen she concocted even attracted my attention, as it made her appealing to the predators. Though it may have cost her life, it also gave the rest of us precious seconds to collect our bearings and prepare for the fight that we might not have had otherwise. While the boars began to charge at us all at once, Samara began to run around the clearing, leaving just a few boars with us as Samara was slowly being gored by the rest. Day 1
I figure it's about time I get myself acquainted with my fellow 'associates' and with how expeditions are performed.
On this expedition's roster:
- Hogo Pok'sharr. Orc..ish? I'm not exactly familiar with what exactly he is, but he at least seems a sturdy sort. Seems easily amused by my cantrips, hopefully he'll be able to keep focused on the job at hand. In spite of his build, he actually seems to prefer using an oversized firearm. Maybe he can use it as a club when it's out of ammunition.
- Samara Slitherslime. An ooze? I was under the impression oozes were mindless creatures. Seems to be shaped like a medusa, and at least has some of their eyesight-based witchcraft, but instead of petrifying me... she gave me a sweet tooth. Hopefully she isn't as feeble as oozes tend to be. Seems to be an alchemist of some variety.
- Swaying Petals. A walking, talking sunflower. Seems to be a devout of another deity, and speaks happily.
- And me.
Everyone seems to be a friendly sort in this group. I'll... try my best.
The job is that a pack of boars are hassling a nearby village. The complication is that we only vaguely know where the village happens to be, and there seem to be no direct roads. Petals takes charge in guiding us, with Samara's aid. Hogo and I keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary, but I'm woefully unprepared for the environment. I may have to research to see if there's a spell for improving my eyesight beyond being able to see in the dark...
Day 2
We seemed to have made very little progress on the first day, encountering some lanky tree-like creature that the others seemed to recognize. What were they doing so far out from the city if they were an associate? Strange behavior.
While on our way, our group encountered someone begging for help for a fallen comrade. This person leads us behind a tree, but we were suddenly accosted by swarms of giant, fist-sized ticks. Two groups hassled us, one on Hogo and Swaying Petals, and one on Samara and myself. Samara's bombs were highly effective at dealing with the swarms of ticks, thankfully. Petals's fire magic was also potent... I want to cast a fireball... Hogo had been sent away by some magic, and the person we followed seemed to be some beastly trickster type known as a tikbalang. Typically you'd expect their sort to be fey, but not this one. It reveled in its deception, and Hogo provoked combat by shooting it with his gun. Luckily, our combined might was more than enough.
We continued on our journey, and we think we're getting close. Probably less than a day's worth of travel, so after harvesting the creature, we set up camp once more.
Day 3
The atmosphere of the forest has shifted notably, since we seem to be close. Signs of heightened boar activity. Time to get to work.
Post Battle Report
The fight is over, and not without sacrifices.
One of the boars was particularly vicious, but luckily for us, the villagers had some arrows with which to help us. Their arrows were effective, but seemed to glance off that vicious boar. Hogo and I attempted to coordinate our strikes, but the boars had other ideas for me.
Next thing I know, is that Petals and Samara were fighting for their lives, and that Hogo had used a unique healing technique on me to return me from the brink of death. The odds suddenly look out of our favor, and Hogo urges me to flee, to return with another party and avenge the group. Hogo unleashes a cloud of fog from his pocket, which he uses to hide out. To think I almost did just leave them to their fates... and my staff. My body's ability to put itself back together came in handy, as I was able to knit my wounds and leave a breadcrumb trail back to the site. Seconds later I have returned to find Hogo in a tree, and both Samara and Petals on the ground, nearly dead each of them. The boars seem to be attempting to uproot the tree Hogo is in, so with some quick thinking, I retrieve my staff and throw my voice to draw the attention of the boars away from him and towards me. The ones near Samara and Petals were not so easily distracted.
