When making a new character after a death, you are given an amount of starting gold equal to (Your Level - 1) on the [https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=587 Character Wealth] table. Subtract the value of any items you gave away from the starting wealth you receive.
For example, if you had a level 7 character die, your new character would start with 450gp. If you had Willed a +1 Striking Dagger (worth 100gp) to another character, you would instead start with 350gp.

During the course of the game characters may die or retire.

Death

When a character is dead at the end of an Expedition, it must be decided if an effort will be made to resurrect them. If a character cannot be saved then they are laid to rest.

  • The player and a Storyteller will discuss what becomes of the characters' belongings including any magic items, gold, and extraordinary rewards.
  • A player can choose to have some or all of their items transferred to their new character. They must have an in-world reason for doing so, and the decision is open to Storyteller veto.
  • The player is given a new character sheet. The new character will begin at the same level and experience as the deceased one.

Retirement

A player may decide their characters' story has reached its natural conclusion or that they can no longer go on Expeditions for one reason or another. In this event the player can open a ticket to retire their character.

  • A retired character keeps all their equipment indefinitely. They may choose to gift or sell items they have before leaving. They must have an in-world reason for doing so, and the decision is open to Storyteller veto.
  • The player is given a new character sheet. The new character will begin at the minimum level for their current Tier of Play. (e.g. retiring a level 7 character grants a new level 5 character.)
  • If the player decides the character should re-join as a playable character, the following applies:
    • The character fills an existing empty character slot. This may be the spot of a dead or retired character, in which case the new character becomes whichever level is granted by the slot. If a new character slot is used, the character is made at level 1 - symbolizing their regression in skill while retired.
    • The character has all equipment they left with. If they no longer meet the level requirement for equipment, they may keep it in their inventory but may not use it until they meet the minimum requirements.
