Log
Log penned by Swaying Petals
Oh my gosh, we sure got a strange call with this one! A painter named Jong-Kyi sent us out to find her husband, Onado. He has been repeatedly trying to use fireworks to launch himself to the moon! When he has done this in the past, he usually returns from the forest a few days later, but it's been a week and he hasn’t returned. I’ve always heard the phrase “aim for the stars”, but I think this guy is taking it a bit too literally, ya know? Still, it’s impressive he’s flown out this far, so maybe he’s onto something. We traveled for 5 days before we arrived at the forest that he had likely landed in.
Exploring with me was Quill (a Catfolk armed with a scowl but I think his heart’s in the right place), Life Giver (a wise Investigative Lawyer Leshy, who I can’t help but look up to, literally), Crows (a mysterious witch with ton of firefly friends who I think might be an Ardande? Just a guess though), and lastly Sabelle Regalia (who said they were a cleric of a god I’m unfamiliar with and they seemed awfully cheerful to share all about it). As we walked through the forest and followed the river northwest, Crows discussed life and death while Life Giver and I had a disagreement with Sabelle who said that all rivers flow to hell. Sabelle is an interesting person for sure, and he sure is hard to convince! There was some conflict as Quill, Sabelle, and I are devoted to different gods, but I try to keep an open mind to make sure good deeds are done!
We found some old tracks that seemed to be from Onado returning to town from a trip long ago. Life Giver found a scarf in a tree that Quill helpfully retrieved. But we also discovered Bugbear tracks and found a large area of the forest that had been clear cut. In the deforested area, we spotted a smoke stack and discovered a group of Bugbears cutting down trees and burning the wood into charcoal. We approached and asked them what they were doing, and after Life Giver gave the leader Owlbear the Bugbear a scare (hee hee) about the forestry fines for the senseless deforestation, Owlbear told us they had locked up some guy they found and now their King wants to go to the Moon as well. Seems like that dream is really catching on! And to go to the moon, they apparently need a whole lot of charcoal. I’m not really sure if the Bugbear’s science checked out (charcoal doesn’t go boom, right?), but I wasn’t going to question them about it. Owlbear told us to go to the Sulfur caves to convince the other patrol leaders to also stop their excess consumption of resources and that afterwards they would send us on a boat to their fortress.
The team decided that since the Bugbears weren’t going to help us smooth things over with their King once we got to the fortress, we figured we’d head straight there. I’m glad we didn’t have to fight the Bugbears, but it didn’t sit right with me. We traveled for a few more hours until at sundown we were ambushed by wolves! Eek! The wolves pounced on Quil, who took a ton of hits but kept getting knocked over by the pack. I tried to cast some spells but the wolves shrugged them off and soon Quil, Sabelle, and even I were knocked out by the wolves! Oooh, It was horrifying, I was sure that each one of us were going to be eaten! But then a shot rang out as a patrol of Bugbears arrived on the scene. The wolves ran away, scared by the shot, leaving our bleeding party members alone. Yippee! Life Giver fed me my Sunflower Seed fruit (don’t ask), and we all recovered from our injuries. We told the Bugbear patrol about Owlbear, and they told us to stay safe and left. What nice guys! I wish they arrived earlier, before I nearly became dog chow, but I’m glad to still be able to write this log!
As if a sign from Sarenrae herself, we found a small treasure horde in a tree along the path! Not too shabby, and it helped me forget a little bit that I nearly got eaten by wolves.
Finally, we found the end of the river which ran next to the sulfur caves and into a lake where we can see the fortress described to us by Owlbear. Soon we’ll approach the fortress to rescue Onado and to hopefully put a stop to the wasteful destruction of the forest. The Bugbears have been friendly so far, but I hope we can rescue Onado without having to fight them. I think I’ll prepare more protective spells… just to be on the safe side.
