Log

A bridge needed reinforcements to hold off an undead horde, and we were hired to do so, at least until a new regiment of guards could relieve us. When we arrived, the guards were scarce, and had held their best against a group led by a large zombie and an army of skeletons. It does not take much between the doll casting life magics and my preparations to dealing with undead, the Tanuki girl and dromaar also possessed valuable tactics for dealing with the varied horde.

Curiously, the hordes arrive in waves days apart. Oswald has no money to pay us but has some stored valuables hidden away in the armory, allowing us to equip ourselves and be even better prepared for the next week. What good are reinforcements if they're a full week away, anyway? Oswald seemed competent enough, if over-worked. I cannot be too hard, times are tough since the latest cataclysms. We took time to discuss the situation and much of the party seemed to think the Rift was behind it, before having to be reminded that the two occurrences are likely unrelated, as places like Lancaster were besieged by undead in prior cycles long before any rifts in reality.

3 days pass uneventfully, allowing us to recuperate and prepare battle plans. Someone had the bright idea to waste good siege engines to impede the horde on the bridge. It is good we did not do that, as they are instrumental to thinning the horde. The next wave of abominations approach and this time the basic undead were supplemented with a skeletal caster. Capri made the bold choice to beeline for the spell caster while I spread the vitalizing force my lady Arazni blessed me with. The doll would explode with healing magic, making short work of the weak zombies. Despite the bold and seemingly stupid strategy, everything worked out for Capri and Hiroyuki. A lesson in patience unlearned. Their survival is good, of course. It would be unfortunate for them to join the armies of the dead.

On the eve of the 7th day, Oswald heads off to greet the coming reinforcements. In the midst of the night, an explosion rocked us awake. We returned to the bridge to find an enormous oni-like zombie surrounded by chickens. Many of the others were concerned about the chickens, and bat-mounts apparently - foolish to divert their eyes from the looming threat, as the giant hurled a chicken critically into Capri's face. The chicken did not survive the collision, revealing the necrotic flesh of undead fowl. The chickens posed little threat and could have been dealt with later, the giant deserved my full attention. And my full attention it got. Capri, Hiroyuki and I deftly cut it down to size, but not before it seemed to fake its own death and then detonate a fire bomb in an attempt to destroy us. Fortunately for us, the likes of undead are weak in the face of Arazni's wrath. In order to be certain of its demise this time, and thanks to Capri's own bladework having done much of the work, I severed the beast's head and hurled it from the bridge.

Oswald returned with the reinforcements to relieve us. But we only stemmed the tide of their problems. There is apparently a lich at work directing the army at this bridge. This will likely require a more honed hand.
