If a character option has been reprinted with the same name, use the new version as if it were errata. No additional retraining is necessary.
If a character option has not been reprinted, characters are free to use the option as previously printed, or to select it at any time. If there is any confusion on whether an option is available to take, please open a Ticket.
Specific Rules
Multiclass Archetypes
Champion
- Characters with the Champion Dedication are assumed to have a standard aura of 15ft for the purposes of the dedication.
Oracle
- Characters with the Oracle Dedication are assumed to not have access to a cursebound level above 2.
Swashbuckler
- For the Finishing Precision feat, the precision damage is assumed to be all the time, rather than just when the character has panache.
"Ancestry Lore" type feats
- With the Player Core series and Howl of the Wild's new ancestries, the trend is that "Ancestry Lore" type feats (eg Dwarf Lore) now grants Additional Lore of that Ancestry. Ancestries that have not been reprinted as of Player Core 2's release (eg Kitsune) now gain the Additional Lore feat of that Ancestry, receiving an automatically scaling Lore skill. This must match what is granted by the specific Ancestry Lore feat (eg Fetchlings gain the Additional Lore feat with Shadow Plane Lore, as listed in Fetchling Lore).
Rebuilding
On August 1st, 2024, all characters are granted one free rebuild, regardless of the remaster’s impact, with two options:
- New character; you may bring in a completely new character. This is treated the same as a retirement. For the retirement rules, see here: Death and Retirement.
- Character revamp; you may update your character’s class, class options, class feats, general feats, skill feats, archetype feats, and ancestry feats (except lineage/bloodline feats), but your character retains their ancestry, heritage, and background, as well as their XP, gold, and items.
Note: Characters affected in any way by the remaster must at a minimum be updated to comply with the remaster changes.
This rebuild must be completed by September 30th, 2024. Past this time, the normal retirement and retraining rules apply, and an unchanged character affected by the remaster will not be legal for play. Rebuilt characters are subject to the same approval process as new characters. The more specific you are in the ticket as to what changes are being made, the quicker this process will go.
Player Core 1/GM Core (11/15/2023)
General Guidance
Game Rules
Players and GMs must use the remastered rules of the game immediately where possible.
- Example: Recall Knowledge has been updated with additional guidelines. These take effect immediately for all sessions.
- Example: The Refocus activity and the focus spell rules have been updated to be more intuitive. All characters immediately begin using these rules.
- Example: Monster abilities such as Grab are no longer automatic, but allow a free skill check to attempt the action. GMs immediately begin using this new version of the rules.
- Example: The simplified Crafting changes have been implemented.
Inventor feat will NOT be allowed to invent Uncommon and Rare items.
Character Options
Beginning on November 15, 2023, no new characters may be created using the class chassis printed in the Core Rulebook if the class has been reprinted in the Player Core.
- This affects the following classes: bard, cleric, druid, fighter, ranger, rogue, witch, wizard.
- Existing characters using any of the updated classes must rebuild their character to either fit the new chassis or as a different class. There will be a grace period for this to be done.
If a character option has been reprinted with the same name, use the new version as if it were errata. No additional retraining is necessary.
- Example: divine lance has been reprinted with new Remaster-compatible rules. All PCs with divine lance must update the spell accordingly.
If a character option has not been reprinted, characters are free to use the option as previously printed, or to select it at any time.
- Example: the brooch of shielding has not been reprinted. Characters may still purchase and use a brooch of shielding.
- Example: the produce flame spell has not been reprinted, but ignition takes its place thematically. Characters may learn either spell anytime they would learn a new spell, and could learn both spells if they chose.
- Example: the oracle class has not yet been remastered. Players may still build and play oracles using the rules in the Pathfinder Advanced Player’s Guide.
An oracle who learns divine lance must still use the remastered version of the spell.
Specific Rules
Alignment
Alignment has been removed from the game. PCs and NPCs no longer have alignment.
Edicts and Anathema: To replace certain aspects of alignment, edicts and anathema are being emphasized. These are voluntary and optional, though deities and classes may introduce specific edicts and anathema which are not optional.
Holy and Unholy: Many previously-aligned options now have either the holy, unholy, or sanctified traits. At a GM’s discretion, enemy abilities which previously had the good or evil traits may now have the holy or unholy trait.
- Example: A quasit’s strikes previously had the evil trait. A GM may choose to give them the unholy trait, as quasits are demonic creatures. Similarly, a quasit’s weakness to good should now be considered a weakness to holy.
Spell Schools
For non-remastered features and abilities that mention spell schools, spells/items/effects can be expected to have their pre-remaster schools. For new spells printed along with and after the remaster, they do not have any spell school, and will not apply for any of the aforementioned features and abilities.
Rebuilding
On November 15, 2023, all characters are granted one free rebuild, regardless of the remaster’s impact, with two options:
- New character; you may bring in a completely new character. This is treated the same as a retirement, but you retain all XP and come in at the same level.
- Exception: Existing Tieflings and Aasimar must update their Heritage to Nephilim, though their Ancestry must remain the same. In this case, they are allowed to take any feats that have not been reprinted for their respective bloodline, unless they overlap with Nephilim feats.
This rebuild must be completed by the end of the year, 2023. Past this time, the normal retirement and retraining rules apply, and an unchanged character affected by the remaster will not be legal for play. Rebuilt characters are subject to the same approval process as new characters. The more specific you are in the ticket as to what changes are being made, the quicker this process will go.
