Associates investigate rumors of hostile giants around a settlement.
Log
Autumn 231. Sightings of Jotunborn could herald ill omens.
--
After hearing tell of hostile giants in the lands surrounding a remote settlement, our associates were sent to take a look into the issue. The journey to the settlement in question took about a week and went without much difficulty, with our party only running into sparse threats along the way.
Upon arriving at the village, we were surprised to find it… peaceful. If giants had indeed been attacking regularly, there was little evidence to support it. No ruined structures, no recent casualties, no signs of panic. After speaking with several villagers, we were directed to an elderly man who clarified the matter: there was only one giant in the area. Not only was he not hostile, but—by all accounts—he glowed.
And a glowing giant is no true giant at all.
Though denizens of another plane and certainly "giant" in stature, it soon struck me that this being was, in fact, a Jotunborn. Such entities are typically benevolent, but their appearance is said to herald impending disaster. That one had come here was troubling, regardless of his disposition.
Details of the Jotunborn’s whereabouts were imprecise. No villager had ever seen a permanent dwelling, leading us to conclude that he likely resided in a cave or similar shelter. With little else to go on, we ventured into the hills beyond the settlement.
In the wilds, we eventually found two sets of footprints: one larger, and seemingly wearing boots, while the other was slightly smaller and rougher. We decided to follow the booted prints, tracking them through the lower lands until just about sundown, in which the trail soon looped back in on itself. Not long after, we noticed a (notably, glowing) presence watching us from behind a rock. Deciding that this was the Jotunborn we were searching for, I called out to him to let him know we meant no harm.
After he approached, we exchanged some words, resulting in him offering to let us stay at his cave for the night while he shared what he knew about the threats in the area. Traveling to his home cave, he introduced himself as Groth, and told us he had been protecting the settlement from ogres and goblins that had become increasingly bold. It was likely there was an ogre leader of sorts in the area, and as such, they were coordinated and readily armed. Groth kindly also treated us to a meal of roasted rabbit, during which we began to form a plan for how to deal with them.
Our plan soon came to fruition: we would ambush one of the ogre-and-goblin parties on their way from their hideout, catching them just before midday. While wiping the entire camp seemed unlikely for now, as we would likely need far more firepower to achieve such a thing, being able to scare them and put a cork on their aggressiveness towards the settlement would also prove an effective result. The next day, we went about our strategy as planned, settling into the higher hills and waiting to catch our targets, favoring a stealthy approach.
The ambush worked, and we soon engaged in combat with an ogre and three goblins. The fight itself went without major incident, despite another ogre appearing while we were dispatching the others. Groth dealt the finishing blow to the last ogre, and as such, our group successfully protected the village.
Seemingly satisfied with the result, we were soon sent on our way back to Onadbyr, with the promise to Groth that we would stay in touch and prepare another excursion to investigate the greater threat of the ogre leader and all of their underlings, with the intent of putting a stop to their activity once and for all.
