We were hired to settle some kind of dispute at some sort of logging operation, Pomba doesn't really get it but recently they changed the way they operated and now some old workers are mad. We get there and are met by a stuffy lawyer type and we get introduced to Kyle, someone who seems able to summon trees from the Plane of Wood. They recently changed to doing this, but the trees all look wrong to Pomba, and later Pomba could see that the wood looked like... generic wood? Like it was real wood but not, Pomba thought it was weird.
Kyle told us that some of the lumberjacks were getting hurt and that one of the fields was trapped, so we went to visit the medics tent, and there were a lot of injured. The doctor was really nervous about us and Pomba might have been a little mean but he didn't mean to be mean. Pomba talked to Tom, an injured lumberjack, and Pomba noticed Tom's injuries were too weird. He asked the doc to get something and he told us that the trees hit him. Holly Crown went with the doctor and came back with an axe, which apparently the company gives to everyone.
Next we went to talk to the trees, but we were all apparently dressed too nicely and wanted us to die. Taru changed to something more normal and went to talk to the trees, finding out they were fired from the group after the wood kineticists showed up. The treants wanted them all to die, but that's kinda extreme so we left and went to the field that the treants also said they didn't trap.
We arrive on the field and the trees all look like the ones from before, all a little bit off, but each one slightly off in a different way. We start looking around, and Pomba notices that they're planting the trees wrong! They aren't even doing crop rotation, and the soil is depleting. Taru detects some kind of magic and then motions for all of us to come and suddenly the tree came to life! Actually like four trees! Pomba did what Pomba does best and gets big and starts attacking, and while its easy to push them over, Pomba can't hit them so good. Holly and Taru could, their axes were really doing good work! Sutton got cornered and injured, and while Pomba was trying to keep Boophis and Taka safe, Pomba noticed that the trees were also slow, so he made some distance and started helping with Taru. Boophis was trying really hard to heal everyone, but Pomba thinks he was having a bad day, maybe he's still not used to his human hands.
Sutton was looking rough and Holly Crown seemed to be holding his own so Pomba went to help her and we managed to kill another walking tree, before Boophis lit everything on fire. We clean up and Pomba figures out that these were the soulless trees Tom and the treants were talking about. Pomba thinks they turned out like this because they were pulled from the wood plane and not grown like a real tree. So we go back to talk to Cobblesworth the lawyer and while he gives us our money for doing the job we were brought to do, Pomba knows this will just keep happening, and while its not good for the workers the bosses and lawyer are kind of bad so Pomba hopes the workers leave and gets new jobs at a better workplace.
