The Faux Fox
Arriving in front of an unassuming rundown house, and after the group mused about death by way of collapsing building, we entered to find the exterior a facade to a rather lavish room. In a shaded corner we were greeted by our contact, the Faux Fox- an old dog, direct and succinct, with notably bad grammar. The Wolf o' Gold was back, perhaps an impostor or successor, as Aruwyn noted the real Wolf o' Gold was under her employment and (hopefully) enjoying their weekend. The criminal underdogs had resurged under their new leadership and we were asked to bring them down by pulling on the Faux Fox's lead, first to a merchant who could be convinced to point us to an officer with knowledge of the Wolf o' Gold's whereabouts. Aruwyn and Esther quickly dog-eared plans for 'rehabilitation,' my cynical expectation was that we'd see a repeat of prior events and few actual survivors given associates' (Mips') tendencies and the general reticence of Onadbyr criminals to value their lives, (they live in a dog-eat-dog world I suppose,) but I'd yet to see Kora and Eira work and perhaps I wouldn't be stuck with a bunch of bodies at the end of this one.
Paul, the merchant in question, was easy to coerce. The shop was obviously a front, stock barely moved and collecting dust, dogged by problems. He'd tried to deflect but shortly divulged the information we needed. We'd be looking for a Kain Corso in Dawngrove, a village a short ride away, and a code phrase to get his attention. In the meantime Mips broke 'the Vase of Vases' which was an undeniably mundane and worthless vase, paid one entire silver for it, and took the shards along with us into Lady Briar's carriage.
Barking Up the Right Tree
With the carriage the trip to Dawngrove was rather quick, with us arriving at the start of a three dog night. It wasn't long until we were approached by a local, Wilbur the Brave, who quite laboriously related unrelated information to us until finally pointing us to someone who had been within earshot the entire time named Skuld. Mips and Eira undoubtedly deftly handled the deception to get us a meeting with Mr. Corso, and we followed them to a small church in the center of town. Kain Corso had made the correct assumption that we weren't there to apply, and after a few timeouts and clarification on the rules of each timeout, we fought them. I, of course, was in charge of holding the frontline against a mob of wolf puppies (figurative) and Mr. Corso while the team got to blasting. Perhaps I should invest in a tower shield.
Wasn't like I was just thrown to the dogs, though. With Mips and Esther hammering out steady gunfire, Aruwyn, Kora and Eira controlling the room and incapacitating, and Aruwyn talking a lot, we easily overcame them. Remarkably, a good few of them survived, including Korso, and we convinced him to give us the location of the Wolf's location in the Upper Sacks. As we went back to Onadbyr to retriever, Lady Briar and Esther led the survivors on a forced march behind the carriage. They weren't too keen on conversation, and I don't blame them. Who knows what'll happen to them during 'rehabilitation' under Lady Briar... but I intend not to pry into any associates' business and let sleeping dogs lie.
Dogged Determination
We approached the Wolf o' Gold's hideout, a windowless building with one entrance, and we were simply allowed to barge in and confront the top dog. This fight was much like the previous one, though with only three foes in the room, our attacks were more focused and highly effective. One of them, some glory hound named Bernard, died trying to hold onto his sword as I nearly melted it to attempt to disarm him. The 3rd survived, Fence, which I'd managed to knock out with a punch after the team put him in the doghouse. Mips knocked the Wolf o' Gold out and we and called off the dogs, Kora keeping the wounded Fence stable.
The impostor and Fence were turned over to Lady Briar. We were congratulated by the Faux Fox, who described the criminals as now rudderless, (throwing a frustrating number of wordplay possibilities to the dogs,) and handed over his reward. Before leaving I grabbed Bernard to take back to the mortuary, always the dogsbody, but I did feel a bit responsible for not guessing he'd be that stupid.
